DEKALB NEWS: Tucker's look at cityhood
still in early stage
"Communities
in DeKalb County that are considering incorporation won't get it this
year.
State lawmakers have put the brakes on the growing drive to create new
cities such as Dunwoody and a new Milton County, at least for this
session.
Last week, the House Government Affairs Committee adopted rules under
which it will take two legislative sessions for any such bill to clear
the General Assembly.
In DeKalb County, the Tucker community may also attempt to form its own
government. And it could become a successful city if Northlake Mall is
within its borders. That was the finding of a
preliminary study of the idea of
incorporating the north DeKalb community of about 30,000 people." ...
"Tucker
already has a main street, a downtown and a ZIP code —- three signature
elements of a city. Of 99 communities in metro Atlanta, Tucker ranked
seventh in population and 25th in per capita income, according to an ad
hoc committee studying incorporation."

NEIGHBORHOOD OF THE WEEK: Henderson Mill area
Strong schools, housing
variety induce some who moved to come back
"Apartments, condos, townhouses, older brick ranches
and new luxury homes mix easily in the neighborhoods off Henderson Mill Road in
DeKalb's Northlake area. You'll also find stories ranging from tales of growing
up here when it was pasture to recollections of moving in recently, eager to
start a new chapter with a young family."

SPOTLIGHT ON . . . Tucker
Community in DeKalb strives
to control strong development, maintain small-town traditions
"Atlanta real estate
watchers have predicted that Tucker could become the next Brookhaven or
Decatur, and the real estate market in the area has been steadily heating
up" ... "Civic groups watch zoning carefully as land around Tucker and
Clarkston is a hot commodity. Small, upscale neighborhoods and townhouses
that appeal to young professionals, families and empty nesters are
beginning to rise, and most sell quickly."

DEKALB . . . Community aims to blend
progress, charm
Tucker's turn for a makeover
"Tucker is striving to remake itself - not so much to be bigger, just
better.
While their neighbors in Dunwoody and
Doraville contemplate goals like cityhood or annexation, folks in the
unincorporated north DeKalb community between I-85 and the Stone Mountain
Freeway are focused on more basic matters: better schools, sidewalks, a
place to walk the dog.
A loose assortment of civic leaders, businessmen and several residents are
working on several fronts to improve the community of about 35,000
residents while retaining its old-town charm."
